Inner Wealth and Eternal Life

Mark 10:17-22 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Mark 10 in context

Scripture Focus

17And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
19Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
20And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
22And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
Mark 10:17-22

Biblical Context

A rich young man asks Jesus how to inherit eternal life. Jesus replies that only God is good, then invites him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow, but the man leaves sorrowful.

Neville's Inner Vision

Mark 10:17-22 invites us to see wealth as a state of consciousness, not merely property. When the young man runs to Jesus for eternal life, Jesus redirects him to the inner good—God within, the I AM. The command to sell and give is not an injunction to poverty but a symbolic release from identification with outer wealth. Treasure in heaven appears as inner riches—an unwavering awareness that cannot be taken away by circumstance. To follow Jesus is to align your entire being with the divine I AM, choosing life from within rather than security from without. The ruler’s sadness exposes the ego's grip on possessions, and the lesson for us is to revise the belief “I am my possessions” into “I am one with God’s abundance.” In Neville’s terms, the scene is a vivid reminder that eternal life begins as an inner transformation you practice now, here and in this moment.

Practice This Now

Imaginative Act: Close your eyes and picture handing your possessions to the good within you, then feel the I AM rise as your true wealth. Speak softly, 'I am one with God’s abundance,' and imagine your life rearranging to reflect that inner treasure.
