Biblical Context
Zechariah 8:17 admonishes us not to imagine evil against our neighbor or to utter false oaths; it advocates purity, honesty, and love of neighbor as the true posture of God’s people. The verse points to inner integrity as the foundation of outer harmony.
Neville's Inner Vision
Your neighbor is not out there but a reflection of a state you entertain in your own mind. To imagine evil toward another is to entertain a counterfeit version of your I AM, and that inner weather will be spoken and acted out in your life. Zechariah names these thoughts and oaths as things God hates, yet Neville teaches that hate is only a signal you have not yet fully identified with your eternal truth. By revision, you return to the idea that you are one with consciousness and that imagination is the means by which you mold experience. Begin by assuming the feeling of true neighbor-love: see the other as already whole and dear in your inner vision; gently dissolve any impulse to deceive, and reaffirm, 'I speak with truth; I keep my word.' The false oath dissolves when your inner speech aligns with your higher self. When you sustain that integrity, harmony follows and your world mirrors it. Imaginatively practice now: dwell in the sense of perfect communion with all, and let that feeling rest in you until it becomes your ordinary experience.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: For two minutes, close your eyes and imagine a neighbor receiving your love and honest words as if you are already living in that truth; then revise any hostile thought by saying, 'I imagine only kindness and integrity in every relation.'
