Scripture Focus

8I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;
9And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak.
Song of Solomon 7:8-9

Biblical Context

Plain summary: The verses picture ascending to a palm tree and seeing the beloved as clusters of the vine, with the sweet wine of awareness awakening speech. It is an inner celebration of harmony between desire and divine love.

Neville's Inner Vision

Think of the palm tree as a symbol of your upward ascent in consciousness. 'I will go up' is your decision to inhabit a higher state of awareness where you are fully present with the I AM. The boughs you take hold of are the habits of mind and feelings you cling to in this new state. The breasts as clusters of the vine signify the abundance of love and joy that flows when you are aligned with God within. The fragrance of the nose like apples is the sweetness of perception you notice when you dwell there. The roof of the mouth as the best wine is the living word you now utter from your awakened brain and heart, a voice that pours through you and stirs sleeping lips to speak. Your beloved is not outside but your own awareness animating the scene. By remaining in this I AM, by feeling the wine of awareness coursing through you, you awaken the entire dream and plant the victory of God in every moment.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: Sit quietly, close your eyes, and assume the higher state. Say to yourself: I am the I AM, I go up now, I drink the wine of awareness, and I speak from unity.
