Biblical Context
Psalm 35:15 portrays others rejoicing in the speaker's misfortune and gathering against him, unseen by him as it unfolds. It underscores how adversity can seem to come from without, while the inner observer remains unaware.
Neville's Inner Vision
Viewed through the Neville lens, the 'adversaries' are not persons, but states of consciousness within the self. The gathering against me is the recurring mental image of fear, judgment, and the sense of being torn by circumstance. The place is my inner disposition; the event is an inner movement that seems to appear as on exterior scene. The phrase 'I knew it not' shows how I may be identified with the problem, treating it as something happening to me rather than something I am. To awaken, I refuse the split and assume the opposite state: I AM the undivided awareness in which all opposition dissolves. In this mood, the rejoicing of others is only an echo in a dream, and the tearing ceases as I align with the truth of my unity with God within. The psalmist teaches that reality follows belief; therefore, revise the scene with a new central actor—the I AM—and feel the peace that already belongs to you, here and now.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Sit quietly, recall Psalm 35:15, and revise the scene by replacing the crowd with your inner I AM witnessing the moment; then feel and declare, 'I am untouched, and all opposition dissolves in the light of consciousness.'
