Quiet Refuge Within

Psalms 142:4 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Psalms 142 in context

Scripture Focus

4I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
Psalms 142:4

Biblical Context

The verse portrays a person who looks for help on the right and finds no one who knows him, a moment of refuge that fails. It exposes the ache of isolation and the longing for true care.

Neville's Inner Vision

Imagine that the speaker's 'I' is not abandoned, but momentarily identified with human limitation. In Neville's terms, I am not seeking shelter from others but waking to the awareness that the I AM within me is the only refuge that never fails. The looking to the right hand is a symbol of looking for a caring presence in the outer world; yet the world cannot provide the lasting solace I desire because true safety arises from the inner presence I am. When I assume the feeling of being known by the I AM, the sense of aloneness dissolves. The 'refuge failed me' becomes a mental weather, not a permanent state of being. As I dwell in the consciousness that God is awareness right where I am, events shift: I perceive the inner companionship of the Presence and know that all souls are cared for by that same I AM within me. My circumstances become a stage for the I AM to reveal itself as refuge, knowledge, and care.

Practice This Now

Sit quietly and, for a minute, repeat the assumption: 'I am known and cared for by the I AM within me, now.' Then imagine a warm Presence embracing you, and let the feeling of refuge rise from within.
