Incense of Inner Prayer

Psalms 141:1-10 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Psalms 141 in context

Scripture Focus

1Lord, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.
2Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
3Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
4Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.
5Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.
6When their judges are overthrown in stony places, they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.
7Our bones are scattered at the grave's mouth, as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth.
8But mine eyes are unto thee, O GOD the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.
9Keep me from the snares which they have laid for me, and the gins of the workers of iniquity.
10Let the wicked fall into their own nets, whilst that I withal escape.
Psalms 141:1-10

Biblical Context

David prays for protection and purity, asking God to guard his lips and heart from evil. He seeks refuge in God, trusting he will be kept safe from snares and guided away from calamities.

Neville's Inner Vision

Notice that the psalm is not begging a distant power but awakening the I AM within to act as guard and guide. The Lord you cry to is your own awareness, the living I AM that watches your thoughts. The incense of prayer is not smoke but images arising in imagination; the lifting of hands is the steady attention you raise to truth. Set a watch before the mouth is mental hygiene: guard inner speech so it blesses and clarifies your life. Incline not your heart to evil means you disidentify with fearful states and the temptations others offer as dainties. Let the righteous' correction be oil upon the head, a signal that growth is at hand, not judgment. When the words of the righteous are sweet in your own ear, you hear from your higher self, and your soul is steadied. Even when bones speak of mortality, your eyes remain upon the Presence. Keep me from snares and nets, and know that the outer scene follows the inner state you reaffirm.

Practice This Now

Assume the state of the I AM guarding your speech now: close your eyes, inhale deeply, and declare, 'I am protected by the Presence.' Feel the calm as if you are already free from snares, and let that feeling linger for a minute.
