Biblical Context
Proverbs 13:24 teaches that sparing discipline is a form of hatred; loving discipline is given at the right moment. It points to an inner standard by which the self is guided toward growth.
Neville's Inner Vision
From the Neville vantage the 'rod' is not a weapon but a steady standard of consciousness. To spare discipline is to refuse the inner standard that keeps you true to your desired self. The 'son' is your imagination—your character in the making—and 'betimes' is the moment of decision when you catch a wavering thought and promptly return to the state you intend to live. When you love, you correct, you re-align, you prune the garden of your mind before the weeds harden into habit. All correction takes place in consciousness; what you see in the world is the echo of what you assumed within. Therefore, discipline is obedience to your own Majesty, your I AM. You do not punish others; you refine your inner states until they reflect order, righteousness and discernment. The moment you assume the end—already disciplined, already whole—the inner movement of correction has occurred, and its fruit manifests as new behavior and circumstance.
Practice This Now
Assume the end now: you are a being disciplined by love. When a wavering thought arises, revise it immediately by affirming, 'I AM disciplined by love; I now correct my thoughts and align with my desired state,' and feel the correction as a warm, inner light.
