Numbers 35:16-18

Biblical Context

The verses define murder by the means used and declare the murderer must die. They emphasize strict accountability under the law for violent acts.

Neville's Inner Vision

Where the surface law speaks of iron, stones, and wood, I hear the inner image of thought that wounds. In Neville's terms, the act is not a distant crime but a state of consciousness: a moment when I identify with separation and project murder through any instrument of fear. The 'murderer' is the old self, a habit of thought that believes harm is possible and deserving. The decree that the murderer must die points to the necessity of a change of state—not punishment of another, but release of the old pattern from my mind. When I feel the impulse to hurt, I do not address the external event; I address the inner image that supports it. I revise by assuming the I AM is whole and that the other is an image within me that can be transformed, thus the impulse dissolves. By choosing a new feeling of unity, I disarm the mental weapon and awaken to a reality where life is maintained by love.

Practice This Now

Practice: in the moment of a violent impulse, close your eyes and revise the scene to an I AM that does not strike. Feel it real that the other is an image within you, and let the impulse dissolve into peace.
