Biblical Context
Nehemiah 12:25 names porters who kept the ward at the thresholds of the gates. Symbolically, they point to guarding the thresholds of your own consciousness and attention.
Neville's Inner Vision
These six names are not six men but states of consciousness at the gates of my own awareness. Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub are inner guard-posts—facets of attention: vigilance, discernment, faith, steadfastness, gratitude, and trust. The ward they keep is the threshold through which every thought and feeling enters my world. When I attend to thoughts that affirm the I AM, I open the way for light to move through; when I indulge fear or doubt, I lower the gate and invite confusion to dwell within. My true worship is this ongoing act of gatekeeping, a conscious choice to let truth pass and to withhold what does not serve the divine I AM. The presence of God is the gate itself—I AM awake at the threshold, and I, as the doorkeeper, order my inner life so it reflects divine order in action. By assuming this role, I become a steward of creation within me, and the city of my days follows the sanctuary I maintain.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and imagine you are the gatekeeper at your inner gates; place a hand on your chest and say, I AM the guardian of my awareness. Feel it real as you revise every passing thought to align with truth, letting light pour through your gates.
