Read Matthew 27 in context

Scripture Focus

17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
Matthew 27:17-18

Biblical Context

Pilate offers to release one of two figures, Barabbas or Jesus. The crowd's motive is envy, revealing an inner struggle between worldly will and the Christ within.

Neville's Inner Vision

Within the Matthew narrative, the crowd and Pilate are figures of your own inner nature. Barabbas stands for the impulsive, worldly will— the part of you that seeks release through familiar satisfactions. Jesus, called Christ, is the Christ within you, the vibrating I AM, the serene king who issues no decrees from fear. When Pilate asks, 'Whom will ye that I release unto you?' he is your rational mind offering choices, while the crowd's 'envy' shows the motive that often governs judgment: the belief that another's fate proves your own worth. The verse says, 'for envy they had delivered him'—an inner confession that envy defeats the higher self unless you revise. The Kingdom of God is not an external power but the reign of divine consciousness within you. To see this is to recover justice and righteousness: you choose today not to let envy govern but to let the I AM rule. Release the old self and welcome the inner king; let Christ within be your decision, your authority, your peace.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: Sit quietly, observe the scene, and declare, 'I release Barabbas to the crowd and enthrone the Christ within as my true king.' Feel the weight lift as envy dissolves and the I AM asserts its reign.
