Temple Gold and True Worship

Matthew 23:16-18 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Matthew 23 in context

Scripture Focus

16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
Matthew 23:16-18

Biblical Context

Jesus exposes the error of valuing external symbols over inner devotion. The temple and altar gain meaning only through the consciousness that sanctifies them.

Neville's Inner Vision

Behold the woe pronounced not upon stone, but upon the state of consciousness that treats form as real. The temple and the altar are not external edicts; they are your inner arrangements, the imaginings that sanctify what you call sacred. When you swear by the temple, and prize the gold that seems to uphold it, you are confessing that your awareness is swayed by appearances. Yet the greater is not the gold nor the altar, but the consciousness that gives form to both. The 'gifts' upon the altar are but recurring thoughts you cling to as proof, and in clinging you call them guilty; you are the ruler of your inner world. See that the temple’s sanctification of gold occurs wherever you believe a symbol outshines the life within you. The truth remains: the I AM is the source; imagination is the instrument; your awakening is the shift in what you accept as real. Re-center, and let the inner temple be free to regard outer tokens as mere signs that pass away.

Practice This Now

Imaginative_act: Assume the sentence, 'I am the I AM, the temple that sanctifies every form,' and feel this awareness flood your mind. Watch the need for outward 'gold' melt as your inner sight remains steady in the truth.
