I tell you, the time is not out there somewhere in a future hour. The command to watch and pray is a decree to the I AM within you—the awareness that never slumbers. The Son of Man, the inner self, goes a far journey in imagination, leaving to you the authority over your faculties and the work each takes. The porter is your attention; the servants are your faculties—memory, desire, breath, intention—each assigned to its proper work by your present assumption. The call to watch at even, midnight, cockcrow, or morning speak only of the shifting moods within, not of doom; you must not let sleep enter as belief. Stand, instead, in the one undeniable state: I am awake, I am here, and I am doing my work now. When the master returns, the inner order you have assumed will reveal itself as your life. So watch not to control a clock, but to keep the inner vision vivid until it is embodied. Your life obeys the state you persist in inhabiting.
