Judges 8:22-23

Biblical Context

Israel asks Gideon to rule, but Gideon declines earthly kingship, declaring that the LORD shall rule over you.

Neville's Inner Vision

Judges 8:22-23 presents a ruler who refuses rule and says the true king is the LORD in you. The people want a visible, hereditary authority after deliverance from Midian, but Gideon’s reply reveals the real government of the land is not a man but the I AM—the Lord within your consciousness. In Neville’s terms, the word 'rule' is a state you occupy; to want another king is to insist on a limited identification. When you acknowledge that the Lord rules over you, you relinquish the dream of external sovereignty and awaken to the inner governor, the awareness that creates worlds. The 'deliverance' from Midian is the liberation from fear-forms and external dependence, accomplished by the inner recognition that you, as I AM, reign. Therefore, the entire narrative points to inner alignment: allow God, not the personality, to rule—your present sense of self shifts, and consequently your life follows the same order of consciousness. The Lord’s government is immediate and complete when you assume it as your present state.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes, assume the feeling 'The Lord God rules within me now,' and drop the belief in personal rule. Feel the I AM govern your thoughts and life, revising any sense that you are ruled by others.
