Joshua 21:17-19

Biblical Context

The passage records the allocation of priestly cities within Benjamin’s territory and the Aaronite priesthood, illustrating how sacred function is woven into community. It shows that worship arises where the inner and outer life are united.

Neville's Inner Vision

Think of these verses as a map of your inner cityscape. The tribe of Benjamin stands for a steadfast awareness—the I AM that quietly holds your attention. The four cities named—Gibeon, Geba, Anathoth, Almon—are four faculties of worship you must establish and keep: reverent prayer, steady order, devoted service, and the harmony of family life. The suburbs surrounding each city are the surrounding thoughts, habits, and circumstances you allow to float around your central consciousness. When you revise those suburbs to support the priestly work, you are not changing geography but transforming your inner weather so that devotion is not a distant rite but a living, daily expression. The line about all the cities of the children of Aaron being thirteen signals abundance: once you anchor the priesthood in your entire being, the sacred operates through all your activities, work and vocation included. So, you can practice imagining these cities as already existing in your mind, and feel the reality of a life where worship, unity, and daily labor flow from one source: I AM.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and place four inner cities around the center of your consciousness, each governed by I AM. Revise any anxious suburb into order, and dwell for a minute in the feeling 'I AM, I am unified, I am worship in action.'
