Inner Cross, Inner Family

John 19:23-27 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read John 19 in context

Scripture Focus

23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
John 19:23-27

Biblical Context

At the cross, Jesus entrusts his mother to the beloved disciple while the soldiers divide his garments. The scene shows how outer events mirror inner dispositions and invites you to steward your inner relationships.

Neville's Inner Vision

From the Neville vantage, the soldiers and their casting of lots are not external actors but your own thoughts dividing the single garment of awareness. The coat, seamless and woven from the top, points to the unity of consciousness that fear or attachment won’t truly rend. The lot-choosing is your inner decision to stop resisting the current condition and to accept that the outer scene is a visible sign of what you have already imagined inwardly. By placing Mary—your nurturing feminine aspect—beside the beloved disciple, you invite your inner mother and your inner observer to stand together within the field of awareness. When Jesus says, Behold thy mother; and Behold thy son, you are being instructed to see that the self that cares and the self that observes are not two enemies but two facets of the same I AM. From that hour the disciple takes Mary into his own home, symbolizing that you can enfold all parts of your life into one coherent state of consciousness. The crucifixion thus becomes the birth of a wholeness you may claim here and now.

Practice This Now

Imaginative Act: Sit quietly, name the inner mother and the inner disciple, and let them meet in your awareness. Feel the unity of their care and observation as one I AM, and revise the scene with the feeling that you now possess all parts in harmony.
