Inner Obedience in Ephesians

Ephesians 6:5-9 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Ephesians 6 in context

Scripture Focus

5Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
6Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
7With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
8Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
9And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.
Ephesians 6:5-9

Biblical Context

The verses urge obedience from a sincere heart, not mere appearances, and teach that both servants and masters are to honor their role as service to the Lord.

Neville's Inner Vision

Here, the scene is not about outer chains or social roles, but the inner alignment of consciousness. 'Servants' and 'masters' are states of mind: obedience to fleshly authority marks a disposition of attention, fear or trembling, which you can, by the I AM, convert into a single-hearted service to the will of God. To do 'the will of God from the heart' is to let your inner vision guide your acts, so every action is a response to a divine prompting rather than a performance for others. When you act 'as unto Christ', you are confirming that the outer world is but a mirror of your inner state. The clause ‘not with eyeservice’ exposes the trap of seeking approval; instead, you dwell in the reality that all good wrought is received from the Lord, regardless of outer circumstance. The final instruction to masters—that they also treat others well—reminds you that the Master you serve is in heaven, and there is no favoritism in Him. By reinterpreting authority as covenant with your own I AM, you align with a mercy that transcends form and brings unity to every role you inhabit.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: Close your eyes and imagine you are not serving a person but the Lord, letting your heart decide your next action. Revise fear into trust, feel it real that your inner state shapes outcomes, and perform one small act today as if it were for the I AM.
