The Humble King Within
Deuteronomy 17:20 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read Deuteronomy 17 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
The verse counsels humility: keep the heart from lifting above others and avoid turning from the commandment. By remaining in this alignment, the king prolongs his days and his reign within Israel.
Neville's Inner Vision
Your inner king is the I AM, the unwavering awareness you call God. The phrase 'heart not lifted up' is a description of a state of consciousness in which you do not inflame the ego with comparison or desire for praise. To 'turn not aside from the commandment' means to refuse any mental drift to the right or left—any deviation from the one Law of consciousness you serve. In this light, the long life of the king is the durability of your chosen state when you persist in it. 'In the midst of Israel' signals that all your faculties—imagination, memory, feeling, will—are governed by this sovereign state. Therefore, cultivate the inner assumption: I am the humble king in me, reigning by obedience to the inner law, neither exalting nor shrinking, simply abiding in the I AM. When pride or doubt arise, revise them by returning to the awareness of God as your I AM, and you will see the outer world adjust to reflect the inner reign.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes, breathe, and imagine you are the humble king within your Israel. Assume the state of I AM-humility and feel it real by repeating, 'I reign in consciousness with humility.'
