Whispers of the Inner Call
1 Samuel 3:6-9 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read 1 Samuel 3 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
Samuel, a boy, hears the LORD calling and goes to Eli; Eli guides him, revealing that the Lord's word is not yet known to Samuel; after three calls Samuel is instructed to respond, inviting the Lord to speak.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within your consciousness, Samuel is the waking I AM, not yet fully aware of the Lord but ready to know itself. The first call is a nudge you mistake for an external summons; you run to Eli, the outward authority of habit. Eli's line, I called not, shows that the source is deeper than any voice you’ve trusted. The third call reveals the truth: the Lord speaks in your own present awareness. Samuel answers with Here am I, a simple admission of receptivity. When Eli perceives that the voice comes from the Lord, he directs Samuel to reply, 'Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth'. In that moment the barrier between hearer and heard dissolves; the word of the Lord becomes revelation to a listening mind. You are invited to see your mind as Samuel awakening to its own voice. The scene teaches that the true vocation is the alignment of attention with the I AM, not the servitude to another's word. Persist in listening, and the inner voice moves from a distant rumor to a living law within you.
Practice This Now
Practice: Tonight, assume the inner voice is speaking now; repeat 'Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth' until you feel the reality of listening. Then rest in the inner stillness and notice how guidance arises as a natural feature of your awareness.
