Zechariah 8:16-18

Biblical Context

Zechariah 8:16-18 commands truth to one another, the practice of truth and peace at the gates, avoidance of imagining evil, and rejection of false oaths; these are the things God hates.

Neville's Inner Vision

Remember, these words describe the discipline of your inner life, not merely external duties. When I say 'speak truth to your neighbor,' I mean tell your own consciousness the truth of what you desire, fear, and hope for, and align your inner dialogue with the reality you intend. The 'judgment of truth and peace in your gates' is the practice of letting truth govern the passages of your mind and the thresholds of your daily life. Do not imagine evil toward your neighbor—do not entertain hostile pictures in your mind, for imagination is the life of God within you; to imagine harm is to plant trees of decline. 'Love no false oath' means banish self-deception; what you profess inwardly must harmonize with what you inwardly know. And then the word of the LORD of hosts came unto me—the assurance that when your consciousness aligns with these truths, the external world follows in harmony. This is not moralizing from without; it is the quiet conviction that your inner state creates your visible world.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: Assume the feeling that your gates are governed by truth and peace. When hostile thoughts arise, revise them to truth and benevolence until they feel real.
