Biblical Context
Rising within the mind, the speaker seeks the beloved in the inner city of consciousness. After a moment of doubt, the Beloved is found and held, brought into the innermost chamber of self.
Neville's Inner Vision
I tell you that the 'city' is your own mind, a map of stations of consciousness. When you say, 'I will rise and seek,' you are simply the I AM deciding to turn attention from outer appearances to the inner essence. The search for the beloved is the search for the Lord within, the realization that God is not somewhere outside, but the very consciousness that asks and answers. The watchmen are not guardians but thoughts of doubt that check your progress; when you speak to them, you do not conquer them but pass through them by assuming the presence of the Beloved. Finally, you discover him not outside but within your own chamber—the chamber of her who conceived you—the womb of your true birth as consciousness. By holding him, you are sealing the act of birth; you bring the Beloved into your mother's house, translating the external myth into the inner fact: God is awareness, and your imagination is the instrument by which you birth him into experience. Thus, the moment you claim the Beloved, you do not seek any longer; you are the Beloved recognizing itself as you.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the Beloved is with you now. Feel the inner embrace and revise any sense of lack by affirming, 'I have found Him within' until it feels real.
