Biblical Context
Even without the outward law, the Gentiles do by nature the things contained in it, showing the work of the law written in their hearts. Their conscience bears witness, and their thoughts accuse or excuse one another in the quiet drama of inner judgment.
Neville's Inner Vision
Paul reveals that the outward code is not the only measure; the living law is within. In the inner man, the I AM stands as the magistrate, and every motive and feeling bears witness to that law. When a Gentile keeps the law by nature, it is the law being written on the heart, proof that divine order is intimate, not distant. The conscience is the inner court of truth, and thoughts play the role of accuser or apologist in the ongoing, gentle drama of self-judgment. Your job is not to punish yourself for what you are not yet outwardly doing, but to notice where your inner state aligns with or resists that law. To shift, assume a new state of consciousness and feel it now. Imagine yourself already the law you affirm, and let the inner witness accept that reality. Thus, the outer appearance of behavior becomes the inward conviction that you are, here and now, the living law.
Practice This Now
Imaginative Act: Assume you are the inner law itself; repeat, 'I am the I AM, the law written on my heart,' and feel the approval of your conscience as a certainty in the chest.
