Biblical Context
The LORD provides shelter for the oppressed in times of trouble. It speaks of a refuge that exists within the heart, accessible through awareness rather than a distant place.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within me the LORD is the I AM, the shelter of consciousness that never leaves. When oppression presses upon me, the mind wants to fear and seek protection outside itself. Yet the refuge is not a place; it is the steady awareness that I AM. By assuming this inner sanctuary as already mine, I reverse the sense of lack and feel it real. The feeling of being sheltered is the operating power; the oppressive state dissolves as I stand in the truth that the I AM is present here and now, guiding and healing. In times of trouble I step away from perception of separation and align with divine presence as my constant companion. The verse teaches a practical truth: God is the interior refuge—present, loving, and sufficient—available in every moment. No outer circumstance can override this inner sanctuary if I keep my attention on the I AM and imagine that safety as my immediate experience. Thus, I am saved by awareness itself, restored by mercy, and led to peaceful action.
Practice This Now
Sit quietly, close your eyes, and assume the inner refuge already exists within you; repeat, 'The LORD is my refuge now,' until the feeling of safety settles in and oppression relaxes.
