Psalms 74:4-6

Biblical Context

Psalm 74:4-6 portrays enemies roaring in the congregation and idols being smashed with axes and hammers, signaling upheaval in worship. It presents outward turmoil as a symbol of inner disturbance in how we worship.

Neville's Inner Vision

Notice how the psalm speaks of enemies in the midst of the congregation, signs raised, axes striking and the carved images smashed. In Neville's language, the outer scene is never 'out there'—it is the echo of your inner state. The 'enemies' are your beliefs of limitation, the 'congregation' is your current level of awareness, and the 'carved work' represents old pictures of yourself you have worshiped. The roaring is the restless movement of thoughts that arises when you threaten to dissolve familiar forms; the axes and hammers are your inner faculties breaking down those forms. Yet the verse also implies a choice: you can turn away from the noise and re-anchor in the I AM—the immutable, silent witness that never changes while your thoughts surge. When you regard yourself as the I AM and imagine the true worship of God as already present within, the 'attack' reveals you are simply shifting the inner scenery. The events dissolve as you persist in the awareness that life follows your inner state; your imagining creates what you accept as real.

Practice This Now

Assume the I AM as your constant witness and revise the scene by declaring, 'I AM peace,' then feel it real.
