Biblical Context
Desiring God alone, the psalmist declares that heaven is God and nothing on earth is to be desired besides Him. Even when the flesh falters, God remains the strength of the heart and the enduring portion.
Neville's Inner Vision
To read this verse through the Neville lens is to interpret heaven and earth as inner states of consciousness. Whom have I in heaven but thee becomes a declaration that the I AM is my sole object of desire; to desire beside thee is to acknowledge other realities, but the practice is to dwell in the one reality now. When the psalmist says My flesh and my heart faileth, he names the limits of the old self; yet the next clause lifts the seal: God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. The strength is not bodily vigor but the inner energy of awareness that holds me upright; the portion forever is the perpetual nourishment supplied by that awareness. Thus, the verse invites you to align your entire being with the I AM, trusting that your outer scene will follow the interior state. Your true home is the awareness of God within, a present-tense reality you can inhabit today.
Practice This Now
Sit quietly, close your eyes, and revise: there is none I desire beside thee; the I AM is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Feel this inner energy rise with each breath and claim it as your present reality.
