David pleads for protection from fear and hidden scheming, seeking refuge from enmity that plots in secret.
Neville's Inner Vision
Fear of the enemy is not a fact in the world, but a state of consciousness your attention has accepted. The 'secret counsel of the wicked' and the 'insurrection' are inner dialogues that burr into your sense of safety when you forget who you are. In Neville's reading, the cry 'Hear my voice, O God' is the call of the I AM within—awareness that can see through the plan as a mere mental image. When you identify with the immutable I AM rather than with the body or the storm outside, the trowel of bitter words and the snares become irrelevant. The arrows of insult are arrows of thought; to 'shoot at the perfect' is the mind attempting to wound the true self, which it cannot reach when you remain aware of your divine state. The remedy is to revise the scene from fear to certainty, to feel oneself already preserved by the one life that you are. Thus, the inward depths of their search reveal nothing but your own settled peace.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the state 'I AM' as your now; feel a shield of light surrounding you and declare, 'I am preserved by the presence of God within me,' until fear dissolves.
