Biblical Context
The psalmist asks for mercy and declares trust in God. He chooses to seek refuge under the shadow of divine wings until the calamities pass.
Neville's Inner Vision
Notice that the petition be merciful unto me is not asking God to change outer events but to awaken you to your own true state. Mercy is a state of consciousness—the I AM aware of itself expressed as compassion. When the soul trusts in thee, it means your attention surrenders to the divine provision within. The phrase in the shadow of thy wings becomes a practice of where you place your attention: under the protective shelter of awareness, not in the volatile circumstances. The calamities you perceive are not apart from you but movements of your inner life. By choosing to dwell in that winged presence, you revise the very atmosphere of experience; fear softens, and guidance emerges as an inner impulse or intuitive direction. Your imagination is the actual sanctuary; by assuming the feeling of being kept by God—of being led, cared for, and kept safe—you enact the reality of mercy. So step into the I AM, declare I am merciful and I am sheltered, and let that feeling recast your day.
Practice This Now
Practice this now: close your eyes, imagine the wings of God surrounding you, and dwell in the feeling of being sheltered for five minutes.
