Biblical Context
David cries to the LORD and is heard; he sleeps and wakes refreshed because the LORD sustains him. He declares confidence over tens of thousands of foes, trusting the LORD to arise and deliver him.
Neville's Inner Vision
Notice how the Psalmist places every outer event inside the chamber of consciousness. I cried unto the LORD with my voice—this is not a cry to a distant God, but an awakening within the I AM that you are, from the height of your holy hill. When I lay down and slept and awaked, for the LORD sustained me, I am learning that rest is not inactivity but alignment; in that stillness the inner governor holds me, so fear loses its power. The declaration, I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people... round about, is a decision of the soul to dwell in the awareness that the imagined multitude are only inner occurrences, not real outside forces. Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Here 'Arise' is the shift of attention—within me a new movement of imagination uproots the sense of lack and attack. The enemy’s teeth are broken as I realize that all so-called adversaries are only thoughts, fears, and appearances dissolved by the light of the I AM.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume, 'I am heard' and 'the LORD sustains me.' Feel the breath bring rest; imagine darkness dissolving into light as the imagined foes melt away.
