Biblical Context
Surely goodness and mercy accompany the speaker all the days of life. He declares he will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Neville's Inner Vision
Imagine that 'surely goodness and mercy shall follow me' is not a future condition imposed by a distant deity, but a present mood of consciousness you choose to inhabit. In this view, 'the Lord' is not a geographical place but your own I AM, your constant awareness. When you entertain the assumption that you are already contained within this divine dwelling, the inner movements of life align to reflect it: goodness appears as harmony of circumstances, mercy as a soft, uncondemning state toward yourself and others. The word 'follow' becomes a felt trailing glow of your chosen state, not a chase. As you dwell in this inner house—your awareness of being lovingly supported—you become a magnet for providential guidance, protection, and benevolence. The outer world then adjusts to the inner conviction, revealing that Providence has never left you; you simply dropped into the inner kingdom where you stand as the witness of God’s reality. Practice seeing yourself as already there, and you will live from that house forever.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Close your eyes, declare, 'I am dwelling in the house of the Lord forever,' and feel the atmosphere of goodness and mercy enveloping you now.
