Biblical Context
Psalm 23 portrays the Lord as a shepherd who provides, guides, and restores the soul, leading from green pastures to still waters and through danger to abundance. The speaker trusts the presence of God as inner reality.
Neville's Inner Vision
Psalm 23 reveals the Lord as the shepherd of my inner state—the I AM that never leaves my side. This is not an external person but my own awareness guiding me into green pastures of clarity and toward the still waters of calm perception. When my soul is restored, I am returning to the paths of righteousness for the sake of my true being. If I walk through the valley of the shadow of death—those fearful thoughts—I fear no evil, for I am with my own I AM, and the rod and staff of my consciousness comfort me. A table is prepared before my enemies, for abundance flows within my mind; I anoint my head with oil, my cup runs over, because my awareness is turned to the Divine. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I dwell in the house of the LORD forever, for I am always in the presence of God within.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the posture of the shepherd of your own consciousness. Say, 'I AM my shepherd; I shall not want,' and revise any lack by declaring, 'Only abundance, guidance, and peace are mine,' then feel it real for several breaths.
