Read Psalms 142 in context

Scripture Focus

5I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.
6Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.
7Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.
Psalms 142:5-7

Biblical Context

The psalm centers on God as refuge and portion. The speaker asks for deliverance and release from inner confinement so they may praise.

Neville's Inner Vision

Within the psalm, you discover that the speaker is not petitioning a distant deity but waking to the truth that the I AM is the refuge and portion here, now, in the land of the living. The cry to attend to the plea is an invitation to attention—the awareness that you have been brought very low only in appearance, not in reality. When you imagine the inner persecutors as mere thoughts of limitation, you are delivering your soul from the prison of fear. The rescue comes not from outside but by turning your attention to the inner sanctuary where gratitude and praise rise as natural outcomes. When the righteous compass you about, it is the alignment of your faculties—faith, discernment, courage—circling the awareness that you are divinely supplied and unconditionally supported. If you dwell in this state, you will find the promise true: you shall be dealt with bountifully, your life relaxing into abundance, liberation, and the liberty to praise.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and repeat: I AM the refuge; I am my portion. Revise the sense of captivity by feeling light flood your chest as you imagine stepping from inner prison into the freedom of praise.
