Biblical Context
Psalm 142:1-7 captures a cry to the Lord in distress, seeking refuge, deliverance, and release from perceived peril. It also marks a shift toward trusting the inner refuge God provides.
Neville's Inner Vision
Consciousness is the field in which Psalm 142:1-7 is realized. The psalmist cries, yet the cry is really a turning of attention to the I AM that is always present within. When overwhelm comes, the path seems blocked and the snare appears in the story you tell yourself, but the true path is known by the awareness that knows your steps. Say I AM is my refuge and my portion; rest in that assurance and let the imagination erect a sanctuary around you. In this revision, the plea becomes a command: deliver me by lifting the burden of fear and by showing you the next right implied action, not from outside but from inner clarity. Persist in imagining yourself already free: see the right hand of support as certainty, calm, and a circle of supportive states. The righteous around you refers to the converging thoughts of goodness you invite into your life, and the promise of the text is that you will be dealt with bountifully as you dwell in this changed consciousness.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and repeat I AM as the you who is refuge; envision a bright sanctuary around you and feel the release entering your body and mind. Then revise any sense of abandonment by affirming that you are carried and protected by the I AM presence.
