The psalm affirms that God upholds the afflicted and guards the rights of the poor. The righteous are invited to give thanks and dwell in the Presence.

Neville's Inner Vision

These lines are not about a distant deity but about the state of my consciousness. The 'afflicted' and the 'poor' symbolize the vulnerable feelings I hold in mind—lack, limitation, fear. The 'LORD' is the I AM that is awareness itself, the steadfast intelligence behind every thought. When I realize that this awareness will 'maintain' their cause, I shift my inner posture so justice and rightness are preserved by my own being. The 'right of the poor' becomes my assurance that lack cannot overpower what I am aware of. The next lines—'the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name' and 'the upright shall dwell in thy presence'—show the fruit of this inner alignment: gratitude wells up as I recognize I am in, and of, the Presence. It is a revision of perception: I choose to live as the upright, meeting each moment from the stillness of I AM, and in that dwelling, praise flows as natural expression.

Practice: Sit quietly, breathe, and affirm 'I AM that I AM' as the upholder of justice in my world; revise any sense of lack to 'In this presence, all needs are met.' Then feel it real by dwelling in that awareness for a minute.
