Scripture Focus

1Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
2Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
3They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.
4Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
5The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
6I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.
7O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
8Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
9As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
10Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
11Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
12I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.
13Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.
Psalms 140:1-13

Biblical Context

David asks to be delivered from the evil and violent, asking God to preserve him from those who plot mischief and seek to overthrow his steps. He trusts in God's protection and in the right of the afflicted.

Neville's Inner Vision

Pause in the awareness that you are not at the mercy of persons or plots, but at the mercy of your own inner state. The evil man and the violent man are versions of fear and agitation arising within your consciousness. The imagery of tongues and nets is the mind's attempt to poison and entrap you with spoken doubt. When you say Thou art my God, you align your thoughts with the life of God within the I AM that you are. The Lord, the strength of your salvation, covers your head in the day of battle, meaning your awareness stands under the protective light of your true self. Do not grant the desires of the wicked power in your mind; imagine them as nothing more than shadows dissolved by the radiance of your inner law. Let the mischief of their lips be undone by the sovereignty of your own calm, centered will. The righteous dwell in thy presence when you choose to live from this inner kingly state, and not from fear.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes, breathe slowly, and in your heart repeat I AM, I AM, until the sense of self expands. Picture a clear circle of light shielding you as you revise any attack into harmony, and dwell there until fear dissolves.
