The psalm describes deliverance from captivity as joy, with sowing in tears yielding a joyful harvest and returning with abundance.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within this psalm, outward praise is the echo of an inner conversion. When I find my mouth filled with laughter and my tongue with singing, I am not praising a distant success; I am recognizing that the I AM, my steadfast awareness, has done great things in me. The crowds that the Lord hath done great things for them merely reflect the inner fact that God is the activity of my own mind, and that the apparent turn of events begins as a changed inner state. The streams in the south symbolize revived feelings that water the seed I plant in imagination. Those who sow in tears are those who persevere in imagining a fulfilled wish while their outer circumstances seem barren. The seed is the idea, the image, the feeling of the wish fulfilled; when I go forth bearing seed, I am carrying the inner cause to term. I return with rejoicing, bringing my harvest—proof that the inner decree has become a tangible effect. I turn captivity by dwelling in the end, trusting that imagination births the outward harvest.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the end: I am joyful, my captivity is turned, and I am standing in a field of harvest. Feel the joy now as if the harvest is already in your hands.
