Biblical Context
The psalm affirms that God is on our side, saving us from enemies and from peril. It speaks of safety as an inner release won by awareness.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within the I AM that I am, the verse becomes a manual for the mind. 'If it had not been the LORD who was on our side' becomes the recognition that the self you call I AM is always present, guarding the inner door and deflecting the imagined attacks of fear. The 'waters' and 'streams' symbolize the restless thoughts and emotions that threaten to overwhelm the soul; but the waters are not outside you; they are the currents of belief you consent to as real. When you dwell in the conviction 'the LORD is on my side,' the imagination ceases to feed the storm; the 'snare' of the fowlers is broken because the mind withdraws its assent to limitation. The 'bird escaping' is the liberated soul, free to rise above the carnival of appearances because you have chosen to identify with the I AM rather than the alert of circumstance. This is deliverance and refuge born from inner alignment, a proof that Providence is your present awareness, not distant help.
Practice This Now
Assume a present-tense stance: 'The LORD is on my side now.' Feel the inner guardian as I AM, and imagine the waters receding and the snare breaking as you breathe. Do this for 5 minutes today.
