Biblical Context
The psalmist laments the loss of godliness and the spread of vanity, flattery, and pride in human speech. God will cut off flattering lips and boastful tongues, exposing the illusion of mastery apart from the Lord.
Neville's Inner Vision
Here, the outer scene of psalmic complaint is not a history to be observed, but a state of consciousness to be acknowledged. The godly man ceasing and the faithful failing from among the children of men reveal a mind disidentified from its I AM and caught in the flutter of egoic need to prove itself by clever words. The 'vanity' spoken by neighbor and the 'double heart' are simply two faces of one inner dialogue: the self insisting, 'our lips are our own; who is lord over us?' When you believe your voice can prevail apart from God, you have erected a throne in your mouth where pride sits. The Lord’s action—cutting off flattering lips and the tongue that speaks proud things—speaks of a correction in consciousness: when the state of awareness is aligned with the I AM, speech loses its vanity and becomes a channel of truth. Thus the call to humility is not a condemnation of speech but a reminder to identify with the one ruler within you—the I AM—and let all words flow from quiet, unselfed awareness.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and breathe deeply as you affirm, I AM the Lord of my mouth. In this consciousness, revise any prideful or flattery-filled speech by silently declaring: the I AM speaks here, and truth flows from the stillness. Practise this revision whenever you notice vanity in your words.
