Biblical Context
The psalm declares a turning away from vain thoughts and from evildoers. It pledges to keep God's commandments as a source of safety, hope, and reverent fear.
Neville's Inner Vision
Your inner man is the I AM that refuses to be haunted by vain thoughts. To hate vain thoughts and to love the law is to align consciously with the built-in discipline of mind. When the verse says Thou art my hiding place and my shield, remember that the hiding place is not a place outside you but a state of awareness in which you trust the Word that governs your life. I hope in thy word becomes I place my entire confidence in the inner Word, and so life flows from that faith. Depart from me, ye evildoers means I withdraw attention from distracting images and false mixes of belief by keeping the commandments of God in mind. Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live, and let me not be ashamed of my hope, translates to I am sustained by the truth I choose and I am never ashamed of what I know to be true. Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe expresses the law of support within, while the world’s deceit falls away when I stand in the light of thy statutes.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and imagine you already live under the Word; feel the safety and declare, 'I am kept safe by the Word; I keep the commandments in my consciousness.'
