Biblical Context
Psalm 107:39-41 portrays oppression lowering the many, and the divine reversal whereby the poor are raised from affliction and the community is restored.
Neville's Inner Vision
Notice that the minishing and the wandering are not external tyrannies but inner states of consciousness. When you identify with oppression, when sorrow and contempt are allowed to seem to rule your day, you are building a wilderness inside. Yet the psalm does not remain in darkness; it points to the I AM within you as the sovereign rearranger. God, as your awareness, pours contempt upon the old self—your doubts about power and worth—and brings you to a fresh recognition of what you are capable of imagining. The “poor” set on high is the reversal of belief: if you choose to dwell in the I AM, you become the one who rises from affliction and gathers into a flock of renewed purpose and safety. The outer scene of oppression or contempt is always a mirror of inner stance; change the stance, and the outer line changes. Trust this: the internal order you affirm becomes the orders you observe, and the wandering gives way to a path that was always there when you turned your attention homeward.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Close your eyes, acknowledge a current oppression, and assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled by declaring 'I AM on high from affliction' and feeling its truth now. See the 'poor' within you elevated and gathered into a supportive, harmonious flock of blessing.
