Proverbs 9:16-17 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Proverbs 9 in context

Scripture Focus

16Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
17Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
Proverbs 9:16-17

Biblical Context

The simple are urged to turn inward toward Wisdom, and the verse warns that stolen waters and secret bread allure with outward sweetness. True discernment lies in inner alignment.

Neville's Inner Vision

Proverbs 9:16–17 speaks as Wisdom inviting the seeker to the inner room. In Neville's frame, the 'simple' are states of consciousness waiting for a revision. The line about stolen waters is a mental lure, the belief that secret pleasures outside integrity can bring lasting sweetness. Such cravings arise when I forget my unity with the I AM. When I encounter the impulse, I do not fight it; I re-create the state I desire. I identify with the watcher—the I AM within—and I affirm that I already dwell in wisdom, whose joy is clean, open, and enduring. I speak to myself as one who chooses fidelity to my inner law, and I let the imagined secret bread melt away as I invite a richer taste—the taste of discernment that comes from inner knowing. The 'bread eaten in secret' loses its hold the moment I realize I am the only consciousness shaping my world.

Practice This Now

In the next craving, close your eyes, assume the feeling of I AM here and now, and silently declare that you dwell in wisdom, not in temptation. Then revise the scene to reflect a choice aligned with integrity, feeling the freedom that follows.
