Read Proverbs 27 in context

Scripture Focus

9Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
Proverbs 27:9

Biblical Context

Ointment and perfume gladden the heart. So too does the sweetness of a friend's hearty counsel refresh the inner life.

Neville's Inner Vision

In truth, the verse speaks of your inner state where the scent of supportive companionship is the grace of your own I AM. The heart rejoices not because of external perfume but because you have allowed a friend’s truth to mingle with your awareness. The 'friend' is a symbol of your inner navigator—the I AM that knows and guides. The 'ointment' and 'perfume' are refined thoughts, the alignments of consciousness that sweeten every moment. When you entertain a suggestion that feels true and kind, you are rehearsing a state of awareness in which wise guidance already exists and is yours to wear. The sweetness arises because you have permitted your inner being to mingle with that counsel, making it a real, living part of you. Thus, the world changes to match the inner conviction: you experience encouragement, clarity, and decision as if a fragrant balm had refreshed your heart. The friend’s counsel is your own inner wisdom speaking through your I AM, present, aromatic, and healing when invited.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and imagine the fragrance of a dear inner friend advising you with kindness. Then revise your situation in your imagination and feel it real, as if the counsel is already true.
