Biblical Context
Proverbs 26:17-19 warns against meddling in others' quarrels and deceit, showing such behavior harms both the meddler and the neighbor. It likens reckless interference to grabbing a dog by the ears and kindling mischief that spreads harm.
Neville's Inner Vision
Proverbs 26:17-19 is not a warning about others so much as a map of your own inner weather. To pass by and meddle with strife that is not yours is to seize the dog by the ears—your attention latchingly caught to a restless impulse you pretend to entertain. The madman casting firebrands, arrows, and death is your wild thoughts and words when you are identified with contest, ridicule, or drama. The neighbor you think you deceive, and call it sport, is your own image projected as conflict. The line 'Am I not in sport?' reveals the ego’s claim that it may toy with life while remaining untouched. Neville would say: your world is your state of consciousness, and you govern the inner atmosphere by where you place your awareness. Refuse identification with agitation; withdraw your attention from the spectacle of dispute and return to the I AM—the stable, aware presence that cannot be touched by quarrel. In that quiet, peace asserts itself; the seed of strife withers, and truth and fidelity arise in its place.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and step back into the I AM, watching instead of participating. Whisper to yourself, 'I withdraw my attention from strife and rest in the peace of consciousness; I am not the one to play with others' drama.'
