Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
The verses present temptations as inner traps designed to ensnare the mind. They warn that pursuing them invites greater wrongs.
Neville's Inner Vision
Read as a usefully symbolic psychology, the proverb shows you that the 'whore' and the 'strange woman' are inner states, not distant persons. A 'deep ditch' is the conviction that you are swallowed by appetite, a 'narrow pit' the narrowing belief that you are defined by craving. She lying in wait is the mind’s trap, an impulse poised to pounce the moment your attention overlooks the I AM. When you identify with those impulses, you multiply transgressions, for you awaken a habit that feeds on itself. Yet you are not the appetite; you are the I AM, the constant awareness that can observe and choose. In this light, the path to freedom is not uprooting others but re-anchoring consciousness in the One Power that is always present. See temptation as a signal you can revise by claiming the supreme I AM, renaming the impulse as a passing thought, and choosing a higher image for yourself. The moment you refuse to dwell in the ditch or pit, the trap dissolves and a new order of perception arises within you.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and repeat, 'I AM,' until the lure loosens its hold. Then imagine the ditch and pit dissolving into light as you stand beyond them and walk away in peace.
