Biblical Context
The verse declares that anyone who hides hatred behind lies or speaks slander is a fool. It points to truth and faithful speech as the wiser, purer path.
Neville's Inner Vision
Take this proverb as a mirror of your inner state. The hatred you would hide and the slander you would utter are not 'out there' but in the texture of your own consciousness, and the fool is he who permits that inner storm to leak into his words. Your world is the outward image of your I AM, your continuous awareness; therefore, when you harbor anger or speak ill of another, you stamp your life with that vibration. The wise course is to rearrange the inner weather until it glows with truth. Do not chase others; change the inside. Assume the feeling of a being who is utterly truthful, loving, and discerning, and let your thoughts and speech align with that state. In this alignment, covert hatred dissolves, and slander loses its grip, for you recognize that you are choosing your experience by the quality of your inner talk. As you revise and hold to the truth within, you birth a world in harmony with integrity, and your lips cease to betray the truth you wish to live.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume you are already pure, speaking only truth from love. Revise any hidden anger by affirming, 'I am at peace; my words reflect truth and kindness.'
