Biblical Context
Paul sent Epaphroditus to comfort the Philippians and to ease Paul's sorrow. He urges them to receive Epaphroditus in the Lord with gladness and to honor such faithful service.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within you, the apostle Paul speaks as your higher self, and Epaphroditus is a quality of your own consciousness that goes to the limit for the benefit of the whole. This messenger does not care for personal ease; he is 'nigh unto death' in the service of the Christ within, not regarding his life, so that your lack of service toward the inner 'me' may be supplied. When you imagine receiving him 'in the Lord' with gladness, you are practicing a shift of consciousness: the Lord—the I AM within you—is not distant but present in this very act. The 'work of Christ' becomes the movement of your inner life completing what was incomplete in your self-expression. Sorrow falls away as you acknowledge that the inner messenger has fulfilled the need in you, and you begin to treat such fidelity as a model for your own thoughts and actions. The goal is to honor and relax into these inner messengers, to hold them in reputation, and to let their courage inform your daily choices, until your entire being serves the one Christ within.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and imagine Epaphroditus as a facet of your own consciousness, a servant of the I AM. Feel gladness in the Lord, revise any sense of lack, and affirm that this inner messenger now completes the work within you.
