Governance by Inner Integrity

Nehemiah 5:14-15 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Nehemiah 5 in context

Scripture Focus

14Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.
15But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
Nehemiah 5:14-15

Biblical Context

Nehemiah served as Judah's governor for twelve years and refused the bread of the governor. He chose integrity and the fear of God over exploiting the people.

Neville's Inner Vision

From the Neville lens, Nehemiah becomes a state of consciousness rather than a man in a history book. The governor’s bread, the wine, and the forty shekels are not mere details; they are appetites you may consent to when you forget your true source. Nehemiah did not eat the bread of the governor because he feared God—the inner law that truth must govern desire. When you rise to influence in your inner Judah, you are tempted to impose, to take, to burden others for your own advantage. Yet true leadership expresses as faithful stewardship: you do not drain the people or your life by demanding more than is right. Your authority is the wise use of life itself, guided by the conviction that the I AM is the source and that justice sustains harmony. To claim such a state is to feel the prosperity of obedience, not the pride of power. Enter this state now and let it radiate into your thoughts, decisions, and daily acts, until the world outside reverberates with the inner standard you have chosen.

Practice This Now

Assume the posture of the inner governor now and revise any impulse to extract from others; feel the fear of God and the joy of fair service. Close your eyes, declare, 'I am the steward of this inner city, and I will not eat the bread of others; I will give as I receive.'
