Inner Covenant Matthew 5:31-32

Matthew 5:31-32 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Matthew 5 in context

Scripture Focus

31It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Matthew 5:31-32

Biblical Context

Jesus shifts the standard from outward paperwork to inner fidelity. He says divorce is only permissible for fornication; otherwise, both the act of divorcing and marrying a divorced person are described as adultery in the inner sense.

Neville's Inner Vision

In the field of consciousness, the outward law stands for an inner habit of separation. The I AM, the aware self, is not bound by a certificate but by the conviction that union is already complete. When you imagine yourself distributing a 'divorce,' you are rehearsing the belief that your relation can be severed; when you imagine remarriage to a divorced person, you reinforce the sense of lack and the idea that life is a series of endings. The verse invites you to go beyond the letter into the inner law: only the 'cause of fornication'—the inner breach of fidelity to the I AM—can justify a change in relationship; otherwise, you maintain a perpetual state of separation that births 'adultery' as a consequence in your inner world. The remedy is to revise the inner assumption until it feels true, to 'satisfy' the heart with the conviction that you are one with your beloved in your most real self. When you live from that consciousness, the outer scene will reflect it: fidelity, unity, and continuity across all appearances.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and repeat, 'I AM one with my beloved.' Feel the unity as the real foundation of your life, and let the inner sense of wholeness dissolve any sense of separation.
