Matthew 23:21-22 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Matthew 23 in context

Scripture Focus

21And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
Matthew 23:21-22

Biblical Context

To swear by the temple or by heaven is to swear by what dwells there within. It points to the inner center of consciousness—the I AM—where truth and presence reside.

Neville's Inner Vision

Picture the temple and the heaven not as places apart from you, but as inner postures of awareness. When you swear by temple, or by heaven, you delegate your authority to an external sign; Neville would say you are inadvertently naming your awareness as dependent on something outside. The truth is that the temple is the body and the heaven is your throne—the I AM that already dwells and sits within. The moment you realize that the throne is personal and immediate, your promises cease being outward rites and become internal declarations of truth. You are not bound by ritual; you are bound to the one Presence within. If you catch yourself making a vow that contradicts your inner state, revise it in your imagination to reflect your inner authority: you are the governor, not a subject, of your own consciousness. In this way, the sacredness you seek outwardly becomes the power you awaken inwardly.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: Sit quietly, close your eyes, and feel the I AM as your inner throne. Revise any vow to reflect that inner truth, declaring, 'I am one with God within me, and my word flows from that reality.'
