Biblical Context
In Matthew 20:13-16, the parable reveals that divine pay comes by grace, not merit, and that rank in the kingdom is determined by inner disposition rather than outward comparison. Many are called, but few choose to live from that realized state.
Neville's Inner Vision
Picture the vineyard as the inner field of your consciousness, where the I AM, your silent master, dispenses wages as you awaken to the truth of abundance. The penny you once bargained for is an old assumption about what you deserve; grace is the new understanding that all supply flows from awareness, not from time or status. When you notice others receiving what you think is extra, you are being asked to release the mind that judges appearances and to rest in the conviction that the Master is free to give according to his will because all of creation is within your awareness. The question 'Is it lawful for me to do what I will with mine own?' becomes a prompt to relinquish ownership of judgment and to accept your right to abundance. The line 'the last shall be first' invites you to shift from competition to the realization that you are already both first and last in the sense that your I AM encompasses every possible state. Many are called by possibilities; the few chosen are those who dwell in the realized truth that grace is your present possession.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Assume the I AM is the payer, paying you now; feel that equal wage as real in your chest. Then revise any sense of lack by dwelling in the certainty that grace is your current state.
