Bethany Anointing Within

Mark 14:3-9 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Mark 14 in context

Scripture Focus

3And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
4And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
5For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
6And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
7For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
8She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
9Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Mark 14:3-9

Biblical Context

A woman anoints Jesus with costly oil; some call it waste, but Jesus commends her, saying she did a good work. The act foreshadows burial and becomes a lasting message within the gospel.

Neville's Inner Vision

View Bethany as the inner chamber of your mind where true worship occurs. The alabaster box represents a fixed idea of self, precious and closed, waiting to reveal its treasure. When she breaks it and pours the ointment on the head of Jesus—your I AM—devotion pours over your entire being, marking your life with what you value most. The murmuring of indignant ones mirrors the voice of lack and judgment that tells you this is waste. Yet the inner Christ replies, Let her alone; you will not yield to the doubt that would withhold your best from the divine within. The phrase 'the poor you have with you always' points to ongoing lack-consciousness, but by doing what you can you release the old and declare the new. This act becomes a gospel inscribed in consciousness that endures wherever you awaken to your true nature.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and, in imagination, pour out your most precious belief upon your inner life; declare 'I AM' and feel the gift of devotion streaming through you as if you are already whole.
