The One Thing Needful Within

Luke 10:41-42 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Luke 10 in context

Scripture Focus

41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Luke 10:41-42

Biblical Context

In Luke 10:41–42, Jesus tells Martha she is troubled with many things. Mary, by contrast, has chosen the one thing needful.

Neville's Inner Vision

Mary’s choice reveals the true inner economy of the kingdom. The many things Martha frets about are not mere duties but divisions of consciousness—busyness, doubt, and fear masking the simple fact of God-presentness. The one thing needful is the state of awareness that I AM present, uncaused and always available. When you anchor yourself in that Presence, you see that the outer scene is not separate from your inner stance but its echo. The good part Mary took is not a token for a future moment but a present posture: worship as recognition of the divine as your own being. The part that cannot be taken away is this interior certainty; it remains intact regardless of external circumstances, because it is the activity of your own consciousness. Practically, you can cultivate this by choosing and renewing a single inner posture: I AM here; I AM now; and let the imagery follow, not the other way around. By assuming the end, you align the day to reflect that truth.

Practice This Now

Practice: Close your eyes, breathe, and declare I AM here and now, sinking into that inner Presence for a minute. Then revise the scene troubling you by imagining yourself at Jesus' feet, wholly attentive, and let that feeling of one thing fill your day as if it were already so.
